Our Stump Grinding Process
Step 1 — Free On-Site Assessment
Jamie measures the stump, checks the gate width and route to the work area, and looks for anything buried nearby — irrigation lines, landscape lighting, a septic bed, or utility locates. You get a firm written price before we book the work.
Step 2 — Site Prep and Grinding
We clear loose stone and debris away from the stump, set up shielding to protect siding, windows, fences, and vehicles from flying chips, then grind the stump and its surface roots down past 12 inches below grade in steady passes.
Step 3 — Cleanup and Finish
Chips are raked back into the hole or piled where you want them, the surrounding lawn is blown clean, and the shielding comes down. You are left with a level, usable patch of ground — not a crater.
After the Grind
Once grinding is complete, you are left with a pile of wood chip mulch. This can be:
- • Spread over the ground as mulch
- • Raked into the hole as fill
- • Removed entirely on request (additional cost)
If you plan to re-seed or lay sod over the area, remove most of the chips and backfill with topsoil instead — grindings are slow to break down and will settle over the first season. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, move it a few feet over: the remaining root mass and high wood content in the soil make it a poor site for a young tree for several years.
